The problem of sustainability was initially analyzed in the article, then the principles of sustainable development of the agrarian field were listed, the “Three Columns” concept that combine three components of sustainability (environmental, economic and social) were presented, and the existing theories related to the sustainable development of the agrarian field were analyzed. In addition, global initiatives, international challenges and perspective activities were provided to ensure sustainable development in the agricultural sector. The comparative analysis of methodological approaches was then conducted to assess the sustainable development of the agrarian field. The appropriate method – SAFA (Sustainability Assessment of Food and Agriculture systems) was determined to assess the sustainable development of the agricultural sector in Azerbaijan. At the same time, the opportunities for the use of FSDN (Farm Sustainability Data Network) methodology were also investigated.
The agricultural policy in terms of sustainable development principles in the Republic of Azerbaijan was also evaluated in the article. The assessment included all three aspects of sustainability: environmental, economic and social. Then, the activities of the Republic of Azerbaijan in terms of achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were reviewed, the current policy on sustainable development in the country was analyzed and relevant generalizations were made.
At the end of the article the results obtained were presented. Specific proposals were put forward in terms of ensuring the sustainable development of the agricultural sector and the sustainability of the agrarian policy in the country
