Value chain competitiveness in sheep farming: the role of institutional factors

The article examines the impact of institutional factors on the competitiveness of the value chain in the sheep farming sector of Azerbaijan through the Value Chain Competitiveness (VCC) index. The index is built on six indicators - selection, traceability, field organizations, branding, processingexport, pasture management, and environmental sustainability - and the scores of four countries (Australia, New Zealand, Turkey, Iran) are compared with Azerbaijan. The study found that Azerbaijan's experience lags behind other countries analyzed mainly in the initial links of the value chain - in the areas of selection-genetic improvement and field organizations - and there is also a significant gap in pasture management. The article puts forward relevant recommendations taking into account the aforementioned factors
